Come to Our Historic
Birthday Party
It’s a free family gathering
open to the public.
The Old Saybrook Historical Society is
celebrating its 50th anniversary, Sunday
September 7, from 3 till 5 PM at the Society’s Hart House,
350 Main Street, Old Saybrook. Bring the kids, some
lawn chairs, and enjoy ice cream, cake, the music of the Old
Lyme Town Band and balloon artists for the kids.
Learn
more about your town’s history. Do you know Saybrook is the
oldest town name in Connecticut? Do you know how a noted
historian says Saybrook really got its name? (not from Lord
Saye and Brooke) Do you know there was a pickle factory in
town that never pickled pickles? Do you know the name of a
famous resident who was the President of Aetna Insurance,
the Mayor of Hartford, the Governor of Connecticut, a US
Senator, and the first president of the National Baseball
League?
The Hart House and the Archives
building will be open to the public. This is a wonderful
opportunity to learn more about the OSHS and your town’s
history. Join us Sunday afternoon, September 7.

Mission Statement
From its inception on September 11, 1958 the Old Saybrook Historical Society, a non-profit organization,
continues to be dedicated to investigating, preserving and
maintaining collections in archaeology, art, furniture,
genealogy and historical records for the Town of Old
Saybrook. We endeavor to further encourage the study of the
preservation of historic sites, as well as an appreciation
of the historical heritage of Old Saybrook, especially by
the young people of the area. We also actively engage
the public to increase awareness and appreciation of the
Town’s history through exhibits, videos, tours and lectures
