Looking for Some Wicket Fun?
Take a whack at hosting a

Late summer afternoons are ideal for hosting lawn parties. Last week it was Italian bocce ball on the lawn. This week, it’s English croquet.
Croquet is played both as a recreational pastime and as a competitive sport, and dates back to mid-19th century London, where the first description of the modern game was found.
Because it’s a popular British pastime, why not have some fun and host an English “all whites” croquet match and afternoon lawn party for a small group of friends? Guests wear white and don hats—garden hats for the ladies and boaters or lightweight fedoras for the men. The only thing guests have to bring? Good manners, of course!
Buy or borrow a croquet set and create your croquet court on the lawn. You can find easy directions and rules of play at 9 Wicket Croquet.
During the game, serve everyone a spot of tea or Pimm’s Cups, the gin-based cocktail that’s a British hot-weather favorite. It’s light, refreshing and full of fruity mix-ins, like oranges and lemons. You can find out more about Pimm’s Cups on our blog.
Consider moving the living room outside for this party. Set a fun table with a croquet-themed centerpiece—croquet pegs and balls, garden hats on stands, etc.—and serve an English-themed menu. Think Striker Scones, Mallet Meringues, “Stake” Popovers and Wicket Cucumber Sandwiches!
After having a jolly good time, your guests will fondly remember this afternoon as “wicket good fun.”
