Spring is in the Flair!
Using Wheatgrass as a Centerpiece

Spring is in the air. Buds opening. Birds chirping. Baskets overflowing with candy. It’s a celebration of life, hope and all things colorful – especially the color green. So why not celebrate spring with a table centerpiece that’s green and living?
I found something perfect for this season through a “Happy Accident.” I love to juice, and wheatgrass is one of my favorite ingredients to use because of its nutritious properties. However, one day, I left it sitting out on the counter; my daughter walked by snacking on a handful of malted robin eggs and accidently dropped an egg into the pot of wheatgrass. Voila! A great idea was born – wheatgrass as a centerpiece! I love it on my table because the grass is so vibrant and, with a little TLC, it lives for such a long time.
To make a wheatgrass table centerpiece, here’s what you’ll need:
- A container of wheatgrass purchased from a health food store
- Three fuzzy wind-up chicks
- A bag of Brach’s Fiesta Malted Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs Candy in assorted pastels
- A pretty container, such as a teacup, coffee mug, pot or small bowl
To assemble your centerpiece:
- Bring your wheatgrass home and give it a nice drink of water. Be sure to let it drain well
before decorating with it. - Take the wheatgrass out of the store container and place it in your own container.
- If needed, give your wheatgrass a haircut, so that the objects you’ll be placing into it can
be easily viewed. - Place one of the fuzzy chicks in the grass.
- Place a candied egg near the chick’s feet, in the grass.
- Set the wheatgrass on your table.
- Now place the other two fuzzy chicks on the table, on each side of your wheatgrass container.
- Add a few candied eggs by the chick’s feet.
- Be sure to water the wheatgrass every other day to keep it fresh.
- Voila! A fun, easy spring centerpiece that everyone will be chirping about.
Where to buy:
- Wheatgrass: Purchase at a health foods store, such as Whole Foods Market or Sunflower Farmers Market. Typically, they’re less than $2 per container.
- Fuzzy Wind-Up Chicks: Purchase from Whistle Stop Hobby & Toy, Inc. at StoreForKnowledge.com or www.amazon.com. Chicks sell for $3 or less each.
- Brach’s Fiesta Malted Milk Chocolate Easter Eggs Candy (20-piece bag): Purchase from http://www.candywarehouse.com/brachsmalteggs.html or available seasonally at your local grocery store. Candy is $3 per bag.
